Following the tradition established in 2022, I am presenting here an overview of some interesting new open-source typefaces that were published on the Google Fonts platform in 2023.
In this first part, we look at fonts released from February to March 2023.
Martian Mono
Martian Mono, released in February 2023, is a monospaced version of the Martian Grotesk font, intended for code style design. The Martian Grotesk family is available on Github, but not currently on Google Fonts (as of September 2025). It was made by Evil Martians, a consultancy agency with offices in New York, Porto, and Osaka.


Chivo Mono
Chivo (‘goat’ in Spanish) was the first Omnibus-Type neo-grotesque typeface family. Its new style “Chivo Mono” brings together the solidity and elegance of Chivo and adds a bit of the techno-style of monospaced fonts. And Chivo got an upgrade – it’s now available as variable, and offers much more language support.



Several new fonts were announced on March 1st 2023:
- Phudu: Phudu is a sans-serif display typeface inspired by Vietnamese hand-lettering billboards in the old days.
- Labrada : by Mercedes Jáuregui, Omnibus-Type – see below.
- Glook: a contemporary high-contrast serif typeface intended for display use – see below.
- Gajraj One : a Latin display typeface with Devanagari language support, designed for use in large hoardings, signage, and print materials for branding and advertising.
- Golos : a versatile closed sans-serif commissioned by Smena and AIC Media for state and social service websites. Golos Text suits perfectly for continuous reading on screen. It includes five weights from Regular to Black. By Paratype, Russia.

Labrada
Labrada is a typeface by Mercedes Jáuregui, Omnibus-Type. This project began in the Master of Typeface Design, MT-UBA, at the University of Buenos Aires. Labrada expresses the communicative richness of the conversations and discourses of the indigenous cultures of oral tradition.





Gloock
Gloock, by by Duarte Pinto, is a single-weight, high-contrast serif typeface intended for display use.


Mynerve

Mynerve is a handwriting typeface designed by Carolina Short to annotate and comment on documents with a fresh style.
